How would you describe a typical week/day in
this position?
I work about forty five hours a week in an environment
that required me to be on my feet and moving a majority of the time.
This is the norm for my daily work routine.
What are the prospects for growth and
advancement?
Advancement is moving into management and will often take me
away from patient care. These positions can be more lucrative financially
but do create a deal of stress.
What are the responsibilities of this
job?
My job is the management and implementation of Kidney Peritoneal
Dialysis. A great deal of my day is spent in conference with patients working to
educate them on the responsibilities of maintaining their medical care. With
this position patients are in charge of their own treatment so education defines
their success.
How many staff/patients are there?
There are currently twelve nurses in my unit with a patient load
of thirty aptients per nurse.
Do you have a set staff to patient
ratio?
Thirty is the maximum of patients per
nurse.
Is overtime expected?
If necessary, do you have a preceptor ship scheme? (If you are a
newly qualified nurse)
Yes, new nurses to this field of care are
mentored and trained for six months before given a patient a load.
How does the service audit patient
satisfaction?
There are biannual surveys given by the
clinic.
How does the service gather patient
feedback?
Formally through surveys and informally through conferencing.
