Pediatric Nurse
Pediatric nurses are one of the many types of registered nurses.
They care for children age’s infant-eighteen in various settings. Nurses are
scheduled to work long hour shift and have a greater income than most jobs.
Registered nurses go through long educational paths that lead to a successful
career and a comfortable lifestyle.
A pediatric nurse is a special type of RN that provides a wide
range of medical care for infants, children, and adolescents (Nurse
Practitioners 1). They provide care to patients in a variety of places, such as
care now clinics, hospitals, doctor’s office and schools (Registered Nurses 1).
It takes a sympathetic, patient, and nurturing person to be a pediatric nurse.
They encounter many different medical situations on a daily basis.
On top of having a caring personality, and a school diploma, to be a
registered nurse a bachelor’s degree in nursing is required (Registered Nurse
1). To become a registered nurse it is mandatory to take the licensing exam.
Pediatric nursing is considered a specialized practice, so in order to become a
pediatric nurse additional training is going to be required. All nursing
programs include clinical work experience, which is usually takes place in a
hospital or newborn intensive care unit also known as NICU. They also have to be
recognized by state of board of nursing as an advanced practice nurse (Nurse
Practitioners 1).
To become a pediatric nurse practitioner, it is required to have a
master’s degree. Michelle Beauchesne says,” there are approximately 12,000 PNP’s
in the United States, and we are well educated and well regulate.’’ After
graduating nursing school, they must be licensed by the state they plan to work
in. Nurse practitioners are trained to care for patients with a variety of
common illnesses and injury. Nurse practitioners are the only nurses that can
prescribe medication (Nurse Practitioners 1). Pediatric nurses perform tasks
such as recording temperature and vital signs, update patient’s records and
files, and operate medical equipment. For all the schooling and training people
have to go through to become a pediatric nurse, they earn their money’s
worth.
Also pediatric nurses have quite good salaries depending on experience
and job location. For instance their salary depends on the state they would want
to work in, mainly due to the cost of living standards. The average salary
pediatric practitioners make is between $48,000 to $68,000 a year (Nurse
Practitioners). Some experienced pediatric practitioners can earn up to in the
$100,000s (Nurse Practitioners).
More importantly pediatric nurses have many great skills to
provide great care. Beauchesne adds, “We have the skills to provide great care
in partnership with the physician” (“A degree in TLC 1”). Many PNP’s often have
more time to spend with concern parents. They provide them with information on
how their child is doing. They have a very important ability to listen, guide,
and teach, “and nurses are really good at that” (“1”). They also provide support
and child health care education to patient’s family; they explain how to
recognize symptoms, and teach them how to provide care and treatment when a
child is ill, and know about development at each
stage.
Above all nurses work long hour shifts a week, they could be
scheduled for part time, evening, or regular office hours, including nights and
weekends depending on where they choose to work. Susanne Haynes says,” I work
about forty five hours a week in an environment that required me to be on my
feet and moving a majority of the time”. They also have the ability to work
overtime and extra shifts as needed. However they may be away from their
families for a long period of times for long shifts.
These types of nurses also undergo unexpected/traumatic birthing
processes that leave a major impact on their life. Investigators conducted a
study, “To describe the essence of nine nurses’ participation in an
unexpected/traumatic birthing process to ascertain what impact this experience
had on the nurse” (“Research1.”).The experiences nurses go through are
tremendous. One thing nurses should always be ready for is to expect the
unexpected. They never know when something traumatic will happened especially to
the child; they are trained to keep calm and proceed caring for the
patient.
However nurses undergo unexpected events that could impact their
life. The researchers concluded that, “Intrapartum nurses in this study
clearly demonstrated that the impact of an unexpected event can be emblazoned on
one’s memory for many years, with an immediate response of secondary traumatic
stress disorder symptoms” (“Research 1.”). For example when a nurse loses a
patient in an unexpected event, it can cause a great deal of stress and emotions
to oneself. The downside of being a pediatric nurse is watching a child die.
Most nurses’ deal with emergency situations that is not always successful on
saving a child’s life. This job can be emotionally derailing.
Pediatric nurses go through years of education and training to be
successful in their field. They have higher salary and a greater income then
most nursing fields. They are scheduled to work long hour shift, and may be away
from their families for a long period time. They also undergo unexpected events
that could impact and leave emotional toll on their life. They present
information on dealing with patients, and their families when a major issue
occurs. Without them infants, children and adolescents would not be provided
with great care. Therefore pediatric nurses are very indeed needed in the
society.
